When do Alpine family hotels close?

If you're booking a family hotel in the Alps, it's worth checking the hotel isn't in its off-season shutdown — a significant number of small, family-run properties close for one to three weeks between the ski season and the summer season. This page tracks closure windows confirmed by checking each hotel's booking calendar directly.

Why this happens

Most hotels in the Kinderhotels Europa, Familienhotels Südtirol, and Familotel cooperatives are independently owned and family-run, not corporate chains. The quiet weeks between ski season (typically ending mid-to-late April) and the start of summer bookings (late May/June) are used to renovate rooms, give kids'-club and hospitality staff time off, and refresh children's activity programming for the coming season. A similar shorter closure often happens again in November between the end of the autumn hiking season and the start of ski season. This is standard practice — not a sign of financial difficulty.

How we identify closure dates

The most reliable method is the hotel's own booking portal. Dates that are completely unavailable for all room types — not just sold out — almost certainly indicate a planned closure rather than peak demand. We check each hotel's booking calendar and note any multi-week unavailability windows; these are far more reliable than the vague statements hotels sometimes publish on their "seasons" pages.

Where we haven't been able to confirm from a booking portal (e.g. hotels with no online booking), we note the regional pattern and flag it as unconfirmed. Always verify directly with the hotel before booking shoulder-season travel.

What to do if you're booking in a shoulder season

The safest approach is to go to the hotel's direct website and try to enter your exact dates in their booking engine. If no room types are available at all for an entire week or more, that's a closure. If some types are unavailable but others exist, that's a sellout. If the booking calendar simply won't load dates — that's often a strong signal too.

If you can't find a booking calendar, email the hotel directly and ask: "Is the hotel open on [your dates]? Will the kids' club be running full hours?" That takes two minutes and removes all uncertainty.

Is Center Parcs open year-round?

Yes. All 27 Center Parcs Europe parks operate 52 weeks a year. They don't follow the Alpine seasonal pattern because they're forested lowland parks rather than mountain ski destinations.

What happens to the kids' club during a hotel closure?

When the hotel is fully closed, the kids' club is closed too. Outside of full closures, some properties also run reduced kids'-club hours during the lowest-demand shoulder weeks even while the hotel itself stays open — always worth checking if you're travelling at the margins of a season.
